Exotic Betta Fish

What is an Exotic Betta Fish?

If you think about it all betta fish are exotic! These beautiful tropical fish are native to Asia, specifically Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. They typically live in slow moving water, small ponds, and even large puddles. They are able to survive in water conditions with minimal oxygen. A unique organ called a labyrinth allows them to breathe atmospheric oxygen.

How Big Do Exotic Bettas Get?

Most Betta splendens reach about 2 to 3 inches in length. The male is slightly larger than the female. There are Giant exotic bettas that can grow larger, usually from 3 to 5 inches, but even up to 6 or 7 inches on occasion.

Can Exotic Male Bettas Live Together?

These fish are called Siamese fighting fish for a reason. The males will defend their territory and can become quite aggressive doing so. So, we do not recommend housing males together. However, females can live alongside each other in groups called sororities. Male betta fish can peacefully coexist with several other types of tropical fish and other aquatic species.

What Tropical Fish are Good Companions for Betta Fish?

Just because you can’t pair up male betta fish doesn’t mean that they have to live alone. There are many other fish that are great tank mates for exotic betta fish. These include tetras, mollies, guppies, cory catfish, and rasboras. Choose fish that won’t grow larger than your betta for best results. Other aquatic species that can be companions to betta fish include dwarf African frogs, snails, and cherry or ghost shrimp. Female betta fish can live together and with these aquatic species as well.

How Long Do Exotic Betta Fish Live?

How to Care for Exotic Bettas

For a single betta fish choose a tank that is at least 2 gallons. Purchase a basic tropical tank water heater to keep the tank 76 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Test your water pH to be sure it is within 6.5 to 7.5 pH range. All water should be dechlorinated with a water conditioner before being added to your tank. A filter can be used to keep your tank cleaner and reduce how much you need to clean your betta’s tank. Bettas enjoy a resting spot so pick out at least one hideout. This can be tank decor or a plant. Just be sure that there are no rough, pokey edges to damage your exotic betta’s fins or tail. Feed your betta about 4 or 5 pieces of food per day, over one or 2 feeding times. Obviously this will vary slightly depending on what you feed, but this is usually pretty standard with a good betta pellet food.

What are the Best Plants for a Betta Fish Tank?

Live plants are beneficial for betta fish and their environment. They help filter ammonia and nitrate out of your betta’s water. They also add oxygen. The best aquatic plants to use in betta tanks are Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus), Java Moss (Vesicularia dubyana), Amazon Sword (Echinodorus amazonicus), Anacharis/water weed (Elodea), Moss Ball (Aegagropila linnaei/, Cladophora aegagropila), Anubias (Anubias barteri), and Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum). These live plants are all safe for rare betta fish and low maintenance.
