Half Moon Betta

What is a Half Moon Betta?

Betta splendens "Halfmoon" have tails that resemble a half moon. These pet fish are a variety of betta fish. They have lots of personality and are easy to care for. Our Half Moon betta fish are vibrantly colored with beautiful healthy fins and tails. Our Galaxy Koi bettas and Hellboy bettas are both halfmoon plakats.

How Long Do Half Moon Betta Live?

These betta fish have a lifespan of 2 to 5 years. While most betta fish average closer to 2 or 3 years, good quality care and food will definitely extend your betta’s life. Something as simple as tank size and a water heater can make a huge difference in the length of your half moon betta’s life. PS: Skip the tiny bowl!

How Big Do Half Moon Betta Fish Get?

Betta splendens grow 2 to 3 inches long at full size. Male betta fish grow slightly larger than female bettas. Our half moon bettas will be between 1.5 and 2 inches when they arrive at your home. Our fish are between 2 and 4 months old. Check out our giant betta fish for larger options.

Are Half Moon Bettas Aggressive?

Any Siamese fighting fish can be aggressive, especially the males. They are territorial and are likely to protect their space. For this reason we recommend only having one male betta fish in a tank. Females don’t tend to be as aggressive and can live with other betta fish. Both males and females can live with other aquatic species with little to no conflict.

What Fish Can Live With A Half Moon Betta?

Some great companion fish for half moon bettas are guppies, neon and ember tetras, cory catfish, harlequin rasboras, plecostomus(plecos), kuhli loaches, african dwarf frogs, ghost shrimp, cherry shrimp, and zebra snails.

How Often to Feed Half Moon Betta

You can feed your halfmoon betta fish once or twice daily with a quality betta pellet food. Your fish will eat about 4 to 5 pellets per day, varying slightly. Other live, fresh or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and mosquito larvae can supplement your bettas diet. Be cautious with live foods because that are much more likely to carry bacteria, disease, and chemical contaminants.

How to Care for Half Moon Bettas?

Choose a tank set up that is at least 2 gallons per fish. Bettas are tropical fish so a basic tank heater is essential. While a filter isn’t necessary it will help you keep a cleaner, healthier tank. All tank water should be dechlorinated with a water conditioner before being added to the tank. Pick out a hideaway or two for your fish. These can be any type of tank decor or plant. Just be sure they are safe for your half moon betta. Keep your fish’s tank clean and healthy.

What is the Difference Between Male and Female Half Moon Betta Fish?

Female bettas tend to be less aggressive than male bettas. Female halfmoons will be slightly smaller than males, with smaller fins and tails. Male bettas have a much larger beard membrane than females. Our female bettas are just as brightly colored as the males even though this is not generally the case in the wild. Female betta fish have an ovipositor tube between their head and ventral fin. It is a small white spot that looks like a grain of salt. Female bettas don’t take care of their eggs or fry. This job goes to the male half moon betta who is a great protector and provider.
