How to Care for a Betta Fish Multicolor

Choose a tank that is at least 2 gallons and preferably 5 gallons for your betta fish. Bettas are tropical fish so they prefer water temperatures between 76 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Always treat water with a dechlorinating water conditioner before adding it to your betta tank. Put at least one hideaway in your betta’s tank. Silk or live plants and smooth decorations are good options. Avoid any rough or jagged decorations because they can tear delicate fins and tails. Do not overfeed betta fish!

What to Feed Multicolor Betta Fish

Betta fish are carnivores so they require a diet that is rich in protein. Betta fish pellets are easily accessible and a good type of betta food to feed your multicolor betta fish. Select a premium betta pellet that lists a protein as the first ingredient. Feed pellets  to your betta fish once or twice each day. Feed no more than 5 or 6 pellets per day. In their native climate betta fish eat brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, daphnia, and bloodworms. So pet betta fish enjoy these foods as well. While live foods can be a great option, they also carry the risk of parasites and disease. So be sure you have a reliable source or raise your own. Frozen and freeze dried foods are safer options.

How to Breed a Betta Fish Multicolor

Get at least two tanks, one for housing and one for breeding. A tank with a divider can also be used, but it is best to have separate tanks to avoid stressing the males when they are protecting the eggs. Tanks should be cycled for 4 to 6 weeks before adding your fish. Select a breeding pair with the features you want in your bettas. Place the breeding tank in a calm and quiet area of your home. The breeding tank water should be maintained around 78 degrees fahrenheit for best results.

The bottom of the breeding tank must be bare so that the eggs don’t get lost amongst rocks or sand. If you use a filter it should be a gentle one that won’t disturb the bubble nest or you can just turn the filter off once the bubble nest is being made. Provide hideouts and resting areas for your breedinging pair. Real or fake plants are great options. Place something like styrofoam or a leaf on the surface of the water for the male to use to build the bubble nest nest.

What are Good Tank Mates for Multicolor Betta Fish?

We recommend guppies, kuhli loaches, african dwarf frogs, ghost shrimp, neon tetras, ember tetras, cory catfish, harlequin rasboras, and zebra snails. These non-aggressive aquatic species are great tank mates for bettas. Plecostomus are another option, but pay close attention to their mature size. Even the smallest types of plecos grow to six inches so even 1 dwarf pleco and 1 betta means the smallest tank option you have is a 10 gallon tank. Always provide at least 1 gallon of tank space for each inch of your fish at full size.
