On this page, we will discuss the best food for betta fish. While, JV Betta Protein Pellets are the best base for your betta’s diet, there are many supplemental foods that you can offer your bettas to improve their health, color, appetite, and energy.

What Food Does Betta Fish Eat?

Betta fish usually have a base diet of a high protein betta fish pellet, but they can be fed supplemental food as well. Blood worms, daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and small insects are great options. These come, live, frozen and freeze-dried. Betta fish can also eat cooked veggies and hard-boiled eggs.

How Long Can Betta Fish Go Without Food?

You may be surprised to learn that betta fish sometimes go 1 or 2 weeks without food in the wild! While we definitely wouldn’t test that out on our bettas, we certainly don’t worry about them missing a day or 2 of feedings when we’re out of town. Don’t allow a sorority tank to go for more than a day without food because hungry bettas can be more aggressive toward each other, yes, even female betta fish.

How Often Should I Feed My Betta?

Pet bettas are usually fed 1 or 2 times per day, but you can definitely offer more meals than that if you prefer. Just be sure to feed the same amount no matter if you are feeding once daily or 4 times daily. While more meals can certainly lead to overfeeding, more meals can also be advantageous for betta fish with digestive issues.

What Can Betta Fish Eat of Human Food?

While a good pellet food offers a great base for your betta’s diet, there are so many options to vary their diet. This includes some people food. We offer our betta fish a mix of vegetables, egg and spirulina. Veggies that can be fed to bettas include peas, corn, cucumber, zucchini, spinach, and lettuce. All veggies should be cooked, peeled and chopped in very small pieces. Eggs are an excellent source of protein for bettas. Egg yolks are great for betta fry. Spirulina can help improve and maintain great color in betta fish.

How Much Food to Feed Betta Fish

Betta fish have small stomachs. They are about the same size as one of their eyes. Try to keep this in mind when feeding your bettas. It is much better to underfeed your betta fish a little bit rather than overfeed them.

How Many Food Pellets For Betta Fish

Most types of betta fish pellets can be fed once daily or more. The total pellets you’ll probably want to feed your betta is 4 to 8 depending on their size. But, please, read the instructions on your particular food to be sure you are feeding the recommended amount. There are lots of different foods out there. Feed about 4 to 8 of our JV Betta Protein Pellets per day. Young and smaller fish will be on the lower end and larger and mature fish will be on the higher end. Giant betta fish will need more food than standard bettas.

Pro Tips for Better Digestion in Betta Fish

  1. Space out meals and feed more often. Just be sure this doesn’t mean you feed more. Feed the same amount, but spread it out over 2 to 4 meals.
  2. Be sure you have a water heater in your aquarium. Bettas are tropical fish. So, slightly warmer water is ideal for them and their digestion.
  3. Have a bigger/longer tank to encourage more activity. More activity means better digestion for us and our little friends.
  4. Don’t overfeed your pet fish. Overfeeding is a big problem for betta fish. It can lead to digestion problems like constipation and bloating.
  5. Skip a day! Fasting betta fish for 1 day per week is a great way to improve their digestion. If you have a hard time with this or you want to try a more varied diet, you can feed them a cooked and peeled pea on this day. Feed ¼ of a pea twice that day.
